Hi,
My cat has been on caninsulin (3 units twice a day )for a year. She was being fed Hills feline m/d(canned food) twice a day until her delivery of cat food never arrived two weeks ago and I was forced to change it. I had to give her Bozita (canned food)which I give my other cats and this is much higher in protein. At first she seemed much happier on this food, however her blood sugar levels kept dropping too low so I have been decreasing her insulin. A couple of days ago however her ( she was down to 2 and 1 unit of insulin, morning and evening respectively) blood sugar dropped to 2.5 and then it had shot up to 20 by the end of the day. I reduced the morning insulin to 1 unit but I have found that even if her blood sugar was 16 before the insulin within 3 hours her blood sugar has dropped to 5 and then by her evening injection it has shot back up to 16. I use a blood sugar monitor and her insulin should peak at 6 hours but find her blood sugar having dropped dramatically is already climbing rapidly after 4 hours. Can someone please advise me on the best course of action? My cat is clearly starting to become quite poorly again

What insulin are you using? Still caninsulin? This is a terrible insulin, very harsh. It peaks early and is gone by about hour 6. So, your kitty is without insulin at all for each 6 of 12 hours. I don't have it handy, but google Wiki and caninsulin. They have a chart showing how it works.

Please read the info. sticky at the top of the basics forum. It gives a lot of good info. on insulin, food, testing and a lot more.

I would suggest switching to BCP PZI, and use the sliding scale shown in the info. sticky.

Hi Carol

Low carb wet food will lower the bg's by 100 (5.5) points or more when you change from dry. My recommendation would be to use a sliding scale with caninsulin, so you can dose to the bg you get at shot time. Your cat is trying to tell you that you are giving her too much insulin.

2u may be fine for a bg of 200 (11.1), but not for a bg of 150 (8.3), with a bg of 8.3 you may need a lower dose.

The same for a dose of 1u. It may not be enough at the higher range of numbers but do just fine for a bg of 8.3.

Personally I would stick with the bozita. Hill's food is inferior quality for the diabetic cat. Even if it says it's made for the diabetic cat.

Hi,
Thanks for your comments. I have spoken to my vet about changing to PZi and although reluctant she has agreed to help make the change. However have not gone ahead yet as I am going on holiday and she suggested changing when I got back. Only problem is the cost. It is £58 for 10mls in the UK!!!!! Does anybody know what the shelf life is once opened, please?
I am keeping her on the Bozita and would like to introduce raw food. Will this affect her blood sugar as well?
Thanks again,
Fivecats

If my calculator is correct you are paying about $80 dollars US. I paid $60 including shipping last time I ordered, but others have quoted $75, so perhaps the price of BCP PZI has gone up. (if BCP PZI is what you are changing to)
I use the 100U 5 ml bottle, not the 40U 10 ml.

The expiration date on BCP PZI is 6 months. I find that after about 5-6 weeks I need to start giving a little more insulin, especially at the low end, it seems to poop out a little. I have used an open bottle for more than 1 year, I just increase the dosage slightly from the basic sliding scale.

I can't answer whether the switch from Bozita to raw will affect her bg level. If Bozita is low carb. it shouldn't make a difference. There is a carb. calculator in the info. sticky at the top of the basics forum.

Carol, If you are getting Insuvet pzi, I think it's manufactured and might have a longer shelf life than our compounded pzi. Can you look it up online?

Bozita should be low carb. Make sure it is in a sauce rather than a gravy and you should be fine. Gravies are made with starches, higher carb value.

Here's a good raw feeding site, it will give you lots of info even if you are buying the raw rather than making it yourself.
