I am new to the site, but was floored when I read an article about TR. I have one cat who was born huge. He's now 9. A little over 2 years ago, he went to the "best" hospital in L.A. County. They not only had to do a bladder surgery on him, they disgnosed him with FLUTD (Feline Lower Unrinary Tract Disease). He was producing phenomenal amounts of crystals. He was just over 25 lbs. I was told that in addition to the special wet diet (prescription), I really ought to get some weight off, that he was manufacturing glucose, & was easily headed toward diabetes. But they didn't tell me anything else. He was already on wet food 2x/day. I used to leave dry out. That stopped when he came home & he & his siblings only got a small amount once a day. He has an older brother who doesn't seem to have any weight issues & a sister who's a little chunky. I've been trying to transition them to the protocol, thinking it would be good for all of them. I REALLY want Bubba to lose! He's stayed out of the hospital since he's been on the prescription food (Royal Canin SO33). He's always been a good drinker & that hasn't changed. I just don't know how to get the weight off (besides slowly) with a 'could be' diabetic. Help!? |

The best food you could switch to is raw for all your kitties. You can make your own (initial cost of a good grinder, about $180). The info. sticky at the top of the basics forum gives a lot of good info. on food and other things. The raw food recipes are in the sticky. I believe they are www.catinfo.org and catnutrition.com (org?). You can also purchase pre-ground from places like Hare Today. With this type you have to add additives. Felines Pride comes frozen ready to serve, but is very expensive.
You can also purchase any low carb wet food, again the info. sticky lists a variety, along with a carb calculator. You want to stay under 10 carbs.
I would recommend switching from Royal Canin. It's got a a lot of unnecessary garbage in it. Also, your vet may be pushing that kind because vets can make up to 20% of their profit from selling that garbage.
Get rid of all dry food and treats. Dry is what causes diabetes in kitties.
Switching to raw will help kitties lose weight. It's concentrated nutrition so they eat less. There is also a second benefit, their poop will no longer stink!
Purchase a human glucometer and learn to test. This is the only way you know for sure what your kitty's blood glucose level is. |
