OK, this is going to sound way geeky, but my new hobby is going to animal law related events as a consumer advocate, interested party. Does anyone here ever go to these things, or have an interest in them?

The next one I plan to go to is in Portland, Oregon (I will take any excuse to go to Portland, Oregon), and its theme is: "Building Bridges: Strengthening the Animal Advocacy Movement." www.lclark.edu/org/saldf/conference.html

Went to one at Harvard a couple of weeks ago, was very interesting. Met Chris Green, who chairs the Veterinary Malpractice Subsection of the ABA Animal Law committee. Lots of discussion about raising animals out of mere property status, creativity in establishing standing to sue for cruelty, etc. One presentation highlighted, among other things, how the AVMA has opposed much of the pro-animal legislation that has been proposed, and how they are not, as an organized entity, animal advocates.

It was interesting, it is very interesting to see what lawyers who love animals are trying to do to use their skills to raise standards for animals or establish precedents that can be used on behalf of animals.

i haven't.

When I used to volunteer with another animal shelter, they had an "advocate" program, where they listed upcoming court cases, etc. related to animals (e.g., animal abuse or dog-fighting cases), and people would go... or they'd picket "pet shops" that sold puppies and kittens.... but I didn't get involved in those things.
